Deep Thoughts from Ben

Ben’s mind is so active, and he comes up with the funniest observations and thoughts at the most random times. I’ve started carrying a notebook around with me and when he starts talking, I start madly jotting down his thoughts – this is difficult as usually he has his “best” ideas while I’m driving! Here are a couple of thoughts from Ben last week.


While driving through town one day last week, Ben suddenly piped up from the back seat with these thoughts:

“Birds eat seeds...birds do eat seeds...but...monkeys don’t...monkeys cannot eat seeds...”

(about 30 seconds later)

“I think birds eat seeds...I think they do...but...animals don’t.”


On our way to the doctor’s office last Friday morning, Ben, who had been treated at the Urgent Care office earlier in the week, made these observations about the differences between the two offices:

“We’re going to the GIGANTIC doctor with the alligators! Not to the short doctor...they’re too slow. (And indeed the urgent care office was VERY slow – also the office was one-story, whereas the doctor’s office is five stories high.) And Dr. Morris will be there! Not the other Dr. Morris who had the lollipops. (Dr. Morris is our family physician and a nice man...versus the female nurse practitioner who treated Ben at the Urgent Care.) But...we’re going to see the ALLIGATORS!!”

Mama: “Ben, there are no alligators at Dr. Morris’ office. What do you mean?"

“But there ARE alligators!!”

Mama: “Can you describe them to me?”

“We’re going to get in the alligators and go WAY up high to see Dr. Morris!"

Mama: “Ooohhh!! (laughing) You mean the ELEVATORS! Yes, we are going to ride in the ELEVATORS to go up to Dr. Morris’ office!”

“But...he won’t give me a lollipop. Or a shot. But...SAM needs a shot!”

I love hearing him work through his thoughts, and seeing how he processes his memories.  I figured out a few days after the "birds eat seeds" conversation that Ben was thinking about an episode of Curious George he'd seen recently, in which George the monkey decides he wants to be a pigeon like his friend Compass, so of course he tries eating seeds.
